Back in the lobby, the clerk was already asleep. Zoe led Norman to the counter, tapping her fingers next to the clerk’s head. It only seemed to make him snore louder.

Zoe glanced at the picture next to the front desk, which read “Our Founder”: a grotesque, round man sitting in a chair, bending over toward his feet. He was straining, sinews of skin pulling apart like silly putty as he leaned over to take a bite out of his own foot. She hoped this was not indicative of the continental breakfast.

“Have you seen a couple of eyeballs come through here?” Norman asked.

With a snort, the clerk forced open his eyes. He looked at them silently for a moment and blinked, slowly.

“I’m sorry, it’s the policy of the Hotel Sick not to divulge information on any possible guests who may or may not have stayed in our facilities in the past, present or future,” he said.

There was another long moment of silence.

The clerk cleared his throat. “So...that’s our policy.” He stared at Norman for a long time, the only sound the ticking of a wall clock behind the desk.

Zoe also cleared her throat, loudly. It sounded like she was hacking the word, “Norman.”

He turned. “What?”

“Money,” she said. “Give him money.”

The clerk just stared. Norman’s pulled a couple of bills from his pocket and passed them over the counter.

“Thank you, sir.” The clerk’s grin looked greasy. “But as I said, the official policy of Motel Sick disallows any and all information given out about our guests.” The man twitched like he’d just been stung by a wasp. Then he tapped on the desk. Zoe looked down; a dirty fingernail hovered beside a small picture of a room at the hotel: The Panopticon.
